Etched plastic searches for dark matter
نویسندگان
چکیده
Large panels of etched plastic, situated aboard the Skylab Space Station and inside Ohya quarry near Tokyo, have been used to set limits on fluxes cosmogenic particles. These plastic particle track detectors also provide best sensitivity for some heavy dark matter that interacts strongly with nuclei. We revisit prior bounds from Skylab, incorporate geometry-dependent thresholds, a halo velocity distribution, complete accounting observed through-going fluxes. considerations reduce bound's mass range by few orders magnitude. However, new analysis data covers portion bound, excludes masses up Planck mass. Prospects future searches are discussed.

Direct searches for dark matter
In the last decade considerable additional evidence has been gathered supporting the hypothesis that at least 90% of the mass in the universe is dark: it does not emit or absorb any form of electromagnetic radiation. Understanding this dark matter has become one of the more central problems in astronomy and cosmology. Once a subject of controversy among astronomers, its existence is now well es...
متن کاملExperimental Searches for Dark Matter
There is now an enormously rich variety of experimental techniques being brought to bear on experimental searches for dark matter, covering a wide range of suggested forms for it. The existence of "dark matter", in some form or other, is inferred from a number of relatively simple observations and the problem has been known for over half a century. To explain "dark matter" is one of the foremos...
متن کاملDark Matter Searches
I'll start with a summary of the relevant evidence for cold dark matter from astrophysics and cosmology. The Standard Model of subnuclear physics does not have any dark matter particle, but its simplest extensions, the SUSY models, do have a very apt candidate, the neutralino. I will then briefly summarise the status and the expectations for the next years of indirect searches both with earth-b...
متن کاملDirect searches for dark matter: recent results.
There is abundant evidence for large amounts of unseen matter in the universe. This dark matter, by its very nature, couples feebly to ordinary matter and is correspondingly difficult to detect. Nonetheless, several experiments are now underway with the sensitivity required to detect directly galactic halo dark matter through their interactions with matter and radiation. These experiments divid...
متن کاملIndirect Searches for Kaluza-klein Dark Matter∗
In this talk, we discuss the potential for the indirect detection of Kaluza-Klein dark matter using neutrino telescopes and cosmic positron experiments. We find that future kilometer-scale neutrino telescopes, such as IceCube, as well as future experiments capable of measuring the cosmic positron spectrum, such as PAMELA and AMS-02, will be quite sensitive to this scenario. Current data from th...
